2011-2012 Projects:

Our chapter is preparing for our next year of projects! We are working on several water projects in Guatemala this year, and we are looking for volunteers for our project teams. If you are interested, please contact Project Chair, Rich Roberts at rroberts@earthsys.net

La Pista Puesto de Salud

The health clinic in the village of La Pista provides health care for 2,316 people. The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8-3 and is generally staffed by two nurses. The spring supplying the water cannot provide for all connected parties, so water distribution occurs on a 15 day rotation.

Several families in La Pista have constructed wells on their properties for water collection. We propose construction of a well at the health clinic to provide water to correct their current deficit. The nurses at the health clinic indicated a need for 450 L per day. After doubling this amount to account for population growth, the well would need to produce water similar to the amount used by two families.

The existing water tank, with capacity for 450 L, is elevated off of the ground such that gravity feeds water from the tank to the clinic. We propose constructing a well and pumping system to transport water from the well to the existing storage tank. A chlorination system would also be added to treat the recovered water.

Xevitz Water Distribution Improvement and Design Study

The town of Xevitz currently receives water from 2 springs and a 20,000-liter storage tank. The upper spring feeds the storage tank while the lower spring feeds directly in the distribution line. The entire gravity fed system supplies 115 faucets at 80 homes for a total of 560 people. It has been proposed that a 10,000-liter storage tank be constructed down-gradient of the 20,000-liter tank to provide additional storage. There are two possible locations for the new tank, each requiring different modifications to the system. Either site would place the new 10,000-liter tank below the lower spring such that the tank would be fed by both springs. The new tank would service the downstream homes and would be equipped with a float valve such that the existing tank would fill up after the new tank becomes full.

A water use study would be conducted initially, before drafting any final designs. Getting accurate, metered readings of the water within the system would provide an idea of whether the existing piping layout could potentially service 560 people and whether the water shortage is due to a serious misuse of the resource (for example, failed faucets). Meters will be installed downstream of the storage tank and lower spring, as well as at a few strategic locations throughout the system. Having a water board member track usage for a period of time will show trends in usage and quantify the system load. By performing such a study, there is the potential to save the costs of building a new storage tank or modifying the piping system. If the study determines that the demand truly exceeds the storage capacity, then the modifications to the system (tank construction, piping modifications, etc) can be implemented.

La Pista School Water Improvements

This project intends to provide a consistent source of water for a school located in the village of La Pista. Currently the school houses 150 students and receives water every 15 days. The school receives water from 2 water sources located outside the village of La Pista.

The school’s current water allowance does not consistently meet the needs of the school. By providing a nearby water well and pumping system, this project will provide a supplemental water source for the school to use during times of low water storage.
