Our task was to create a water distribution system that pumps the water directly to the homes, churches, and school.  Prior to the trip, the project team spent eight months planning and designing the system. With the assistance of a local Non-governmental Organization (NGO), Aqua Para La Salud, EWB-USA JAX sent three travel groups to implement the project during June, 2011.  Each group supervised and completed construction on various stages of the project, with the help of local skilled masons, who were contracted to complete the construction of the structures. Even the local villagers provided labor for non-skilled tasks, such as digging trenches. Their hands-on involvement and “sweat equity” ensures their full buy-in of the project.

 

Besides project construction, EWB-USA JAX tackled the educational component of proper water and sanitation practices, by teaching people about proper hand washing, sewage disposal, and water treatment.  With the assistance of donors, EWB-USA JAX was able to bring dental and school supplies for the local families.  Throughout their time in-country, our members interacted with the local children, playing soccer, blowing bubbles, and throwing frisbees. The work that the project team completed not only benefited the Village of Visibakvitz, but also enriched each team member personally and professionally. Everyone is already eager to return soon!
